This week’s Top Ten Tuesday theme at The Broke and the Bookish is “All Time Favorite Authors”. I decided to compile a list of all my favorites across genres, in no particular order.
1.) J.R.R. Tolkien
Both “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” are amazing works of fiction. The way Tolkien created an entire world, including languages, for the books’ inhabitants is beyond impressive.
2.) Stephen King
King is one of the most well-known authors of horror stories, but reading his work outside that genre shows that he is an all around incredible storyteller. I also love the way he weaves tiny pieces of his plots together, creating an intricate web between them.
3.) J.K. Rowling
Every kid born in the 90s loves the Harry Potter books, and Rowling has created an empire out of them. Both the book and the movies are great creative works, and Rowling herself is an incredible and empowering female role model.
4.) Dr. Seuss
Who doesn’t love his wit and the simple but unique way he combined life lessons with made up words and creatures?
5.) Carolyn Keene
Nancy Drew began my love affair with books, making Keene one of my all time favorites.
6.) George R.R. Martin
It takes a talented writer to create such a strong fanbase while constantly killing off your main characters. Martin has created an extremely complex and compelling world through the “Game of Thrones” series and has gotten fans even more invested since the creation of the HBO series adaptation. Now HBO will be beating Martin to the punch by continuing with the series ahead of the release of his next book. Not sure if this is a genius move on Martin’s part, or completely crazy.
7.) Tamora Pierce
Pierce is my favorite YA author. I spent my middle and high school years enthralled with the stories she has created in her Tortall Universe and learned a lot from her strong female characters.
8.) Gillian Flynn
All three of Flynn’s novels are gripping and impossible to put down. They have so many crazy, unexpected twists and turns. I am really looking forward to any upcoming works she has.
9.) Patrick Rothfuss
I really enjoy “The Kingkiller Chronicles” thus far and am anxiously awaiting the third book. While a lot has happened in the first two novels, Rothfuss has a way of keeping the reader in the dark, while making them desperately want to read on and find out what the big secret it. I will be a very happy reader when a release date is set for book three!
10.) Diana Gabaldon
My recent favorite author, I love Gabaldon’s writing style in “Outlander”. I am a huge historical fiction fan, and the way she combines historical fiction, adventure and romance is very exciting and interesting to me. I’m also a huge fan of the Starz TV series adaptation.
Great list! I agree on King – he is just a master storyteller. JK Rowling made my list as well – both for HP and because I enjoy her non-Harry Potter books. Gillian Flynn did not because I’ve only read Gone Girl, I need to read more of her books. I didn’t include Carolyn Keene on my list either simply because she was the pseudonym for so many different writers. But I share your love of Nancy Drew!

I would definitely recommend reading Gillian Flynn’s other books! I haven’t read any of Rowling’s other books but will have to look into them ๐

JK Rowling was on my list too. I might have put Gillian Flynn if I’d had more space, but I haven’t read Sharp Objects and whilst I liked Gone Girl, Dark Places just creeped me out!
